Hi my name is Chelsey Wheatley. I have been
a huge Jeremy fan for 5 years now, and it has always been my dream to
get to meet him. You see, I live in the smallest province in Canada
(Prince Edward Island, on the east coast) so when the opportunity comes
up that you get to go see a NASCAR race somewhere in the USA it is
really a trip of a lifetime. Three years ago, when Jeremy was still
racing with Mobil 1 I had the opportunity to go see the qualifying for
the Daytona 500 in Florida with my family. We all are huge NASCAR fans
and were very excited. I was somewhat disappointed that I didn't get to
meet him, but was fortunate enough to have photos taken with me and one
of the guys from his crew, which to me was almost as good as meeting
Jeremy himself. This past summer while visiting two friends in New
Brunswick, who are also huge NASCAR fans, we came up with the idea that
it would be really fun to take a trip to Richmond to see the Pontiac
Excitement 400 in May. We were all thrilled at the idea, and I was so
excited I even started a countdown of how many days there were until we
were going. This all started when there were 191 days to go, which
seemed like forever, but in the end it really added to the excitement!
So finally, after two long days of driving (over 900 miles), we finally
made it to Richmond. We saw so many great things, and it is such a
beautiful place. We took in all the activites around the track and got
to see qualifying, and watch the Busch race. It was amazing. On
Saturday, May 3, we arrived at the track bright and early, and were
ready for a full day of racing. That day at two o'clock we had passes to
go to the Green Flag Club and our first surprise came when a guy handed
my sister a ticket and told her to be back here by 4pm for a special
guest appearance. The special guest turned out to be none other than her
favorite driver Dale Jr. and her and my brother and I were all able to
meet him and get pictures and autographs taken. After that, we headed
back over to the pit area, because my mom knew I was really disappointed
that I hadn't gotten to see Jeremy but that Amanda had gotten to meet
Dale Jr... Ed Watkins and Jeremy's catch-can man informed us earlier
that if we came back Jeremy could possibly be around. So I stood there
at the fence for what seemed like hours and then finally mom said "Ok
Chels, we should start to head back now, the race is going to be
starting soon." So we started the walk back, but before we got to the
tunnel, we saw a large group of people standing over by a tent with
cameras. We ran over and my mom asked one of the guys standing there
what was going on. He told us that they were having the driver's meeting
and when I turned to look I saw some of the drivers and Mike Helton
start to talk out. There was a fence up so that the drivers didn't have
to walk through the crowd and they could just walk back to the garage
area. So I was standing there looking and all of a sudden right in front
of me I see Kenny (Jeremy's crew chief) walk right past me, and then to
my surprise I heard my mom scream "Chels, there's Jeremy"...he was RIGHT
in front of me, and I didn't even realize it was him! Him and Kenny had
decided to go the other way instead of the way the other drivers
were going, they were the only ones to do that) I started freaking out
and asked him for an autograph...he signed the top of my hat, which I
didn't even have to take off because he was so much taller than me. I
thanked him, but then I realized, I STILL HAD THE CAMERA IN MY HAND, and
hadn't gotten a picture!! I yelled at him to come back and he turned and
said "I have to go"...but I asked him again and he happily came back and
my mom was able to get a picture of him and I together. I thanked him
again, but was so out of it I don't even remember what he said! After he
walked away, the tears started pouring down my face because I was so
happy. Finally, after all that waiting, I had met my favorite driver!
People standing around me kept saying "Oh my gosh, I think that girl is
going to faint" and one guy even asked me "Did he smell like Octane
93?!" My mom started crying after that...but finally we both calmed down
enough to go find my dad and the two other people we were with (Tina and
Kendell) to tell them what happened. I was really disappointed that the
three of them couldn't have been there to experience that moment, but
I'm so glad I have the pictures and am able to share that with them.
That was the best day of my life, it's something I will NEVER EVER
forget, and it was everything I had hoped for, and 100 times more! I
always hear people say that Jeremy is such a nice guy and I always hoped
I would get the chance to see that for myself. He is truly a wonderful
person, and Jeremy, if you're reading this, THANK YOU! Thank you for
helping make my dreams come true! I will always be a Jeremy Mayfield
fan, and ever that experience, I am an even bigger fan. It doesn't
matter to me that he may not be #1 in the points or that Tony Stewart,
or anybody for that matter does better than him. I enjoy watching him
race because he works hard and enjoys what he does, and thats all that
matters. Thank you for letting me share my story about meeting my
favorite driver!

This picture of Jeremy and me was taken by my husband in the garage area. September 02 at RIR. And Jeremy was just wonderful to meet. And look like he didn't mind taking the time. So this is one happy fan and proud to be Mayfield fan. When your driver takes time for you it means a lot. Thank You Jeremy and Good Luck in 03. Love the new look of those wheels. GREAT!!!! I met Jeremy 3 yrs. ago in Mich. I waited 2 hours in line to get his autograph. Was standing there with my brother in law and then all of a sudden we heard here he comes, I turned to look and he was shaking hands with the fans and I held mine out just hoping and sure enough he shook mine, I was in heaven. My brother in law was laughing at me and saying I bet you won't let Mike (my husband) touch that hand will you? Then got up to get his autograph and my husband was standing back getting pictures and yelling for me to look at him, but I was so excited to finally met Jeremy that I couldn't take my eyes off of him (Jeremy). Got some pictures of him though and the back of my head and shoulders. Jeremy is a nice guy and would love to meet him again. Tonja This is Gene (TOYPHD) and because Michigan is next week it reminded me of the California Track (Being so similar) and the day Jeremy came back from almost a lap down to win the California 500. Being an Associate Sponsor of the car I was in the pits the whole race and when Jeremy won we all sprinted towards the Winner's Circle together. While in full stride I looked over at Michael Kranefuss (Then part owner) and in my enthusiasm I blurted out "Holy Shit...He drove like a Motherfucker!" Well, apparently suffering from Brain Fade I instantly regretted my breakdown in manners because Michael is a European gentleman in even sense of the word. He comes from an automotive pedigree and had retired from running Ford Motor Company's entire European Race Operations. I was a guest in his world and here I was acting like a boorish American. Still running side-by-side he saw the horror on my face and I stammered out "OH! I'm so sorry." to which Michael quickly waved me off and said, in his slight German accent; " No, No, he did, he did race like a Motherfucker!" It made the day that much better because here we were, at the end of the day, just two fans of Jeremy. Gene Morra, RAC Designs - Vice President My four year old daughter loves Jeremy she calls him her boyfriend. Our family met Jeremy last year at Pocono he was such a great guy and our daughter carries around a picture of him and her all the time. We wanted to see him again this year but do to my husbands health we could not. A friend of the family works Pocono every year at the gate in which the drivers go to their campers and she talks with all of them. Jeremy was nice enough to sign my daughters picture and accept a picture of her and her dog Toto. It made her the happiest little girl in the world! My name is Jo Stone, I am a DEI fan.. but just had to come here after Pocono to share a story about Jeremy with you. On Friday, My husband and I were in the pits, and while I understand the Drivers are very busy getting ready for sunday.. Jeremy was THE NICEST driver there. Drivers would walk right by us pretending they couldnt hear us 2 feet away. some didnt look at us.. others just waved.. but we were screaming for Jeremy and he said.. let me qualify and i PROMISE I will come back.. Time went by and so did his car to the garage.. we were all like ya ya ya sure he'll be back.. but sure enough.. he came back.. AND signed every single autograph he could.. he went from the pits.. down autograph alley.. allllll the way down the garage area! He is the ONLY driver who took the time to meet ALL of his fans.. that is one first class guy!!! I Just thought you could use this nice story for your website.. Jeremy made a new fan on friday.. as im sure he made many more than just me and my husband! ... You have a great site, and keep up the good work.. Jeremy is worth every minute of it as i am sure you know!!! Jo~ I met Jeremy at the K-mart in Daytona. He was the nicest person I have ever met. You can tell by meeting him he really enjoys his fans. this was a great day I have waited 4 years to meet him and he is number 1!!!! Ed Sullivan, Cocoa Florida When I attended the Las Vegas race in March of 2002, I got to meet Jeremy for the first time. At the Vegas races, I got the opportunity to watch the race in the Budweiser suite. I've gone there since '99 and in 2001 they started to have this radio show on the friday before the race in the suite and a few drivers come up and talk on it. This year Jeremy was chosen to come up, when I heard about this I went nuts. So Jeremy came up and talked on the radio show and after the show he hung around for awhile and signed autographs and I got to talk to him. I told him how i was one of his biggest fans and he shook my hand and talked to me. He is with out a doubt one of the nicest people I've ever met. It was such a thrill to met him and i will never forget it. ![]() MitchWBL@aol.com My name is Jill Strong, and I am proud to be Ford City, Pa's biggest Jeremy Fan!!!!!!! I met Jeremy at the August 12th Watkins Glen race(where he finished 3rd). I was hanging around the garage gate , hoping to get a glance at anyone ! My mother said that she already saw Jeremy go into the garage when we were at the Press entrance, so I was pretty bummed. My sister, husband and I decided to go to the main entrance. We were there maybe 10 minutes when I heard a little boy yell, "JEREMY" I froze. My husband(bless him and his quick thinking) ripped off my hat and pushed me out into the open right at Jeremy. I was able to mutter out "Mr. Mayfield" and he looked at me and said "Only cause you have the right shirt and hat on" Once again I froze. You all know what you would say if you ever saw your favorite driver, but trust me it never comes out. The dumb moment passed and I managed to once again mutter our " I LOVE YOU!!!" Then he made his way to his trailer. I was sooooooo excited, flabbergasted, and just dumbfounded that I was shaking uncontrolably and actually started to cry. The crowd thought that was soooo nice of him to stop for me that they all started OHH That was soo nice, You are so lucky, etc..... So needless to say that I did not wear my hat the rest of the day. But I almost lost it... My family and I were waiting for Gordon to emerge from the Press Room and gave the hat to my husband to hold and he set it on the golf cart he was sitting on. When Gordon and Loomis emerged the excitment was too much for my husband and he took off to get Loomis' autograph, leaving my hat behind. We were on the way back to the car, when I realized neither he or I had the hat. Let's just say the I have never ran so fast in my life, and I didn't speak to my husband for about 2 hours. But I did get the hat. Jill Strong I met Jeremy at Talladega in October, I have always been such a fan of his and was so glad he took the time out to sign an autograph and take a picture with me. I met a lot of other drivers but he was the friendliest. After everything I had seen and done in Talladega that was the best part of it. Thank you Jeremy for making the Talladega trip the trip of a lifetime. ![]() Debra Saturday, June 10,2000-We got to the race track about 11:15, me and my girlfriend Ginger, and we had about forty-five minutes till the start of the IROC race and I knew Jeremy's merchandise trailer was the very last one and we had to go down that way anyway so I thought we might as well wait to go in till after we checked out what new stuff they had. Luckily for us we didn't even see the smaller Mobil 1 trailer right were we parked. We got to the trailor and there was a huge line and I knew Jeremy was popular but I knew all the those people couldnt be waiting to buy stuff, then I noticed people were holding things to be signed and we hurried and found the end of the huge line and got in. Good for us we had a phone because we didn't know he was going to be there so we had nothing to have signed. We called my Mom and she just happen to be standing in front of the trailer so I had here get me a couple decals and a hat and a can cooler. We waited for about an hour and missed the IROC race but it was well worth it. When we finally got up there I told Jeremy what a huge fan I was and how I bleached my hair for good luck for him. He was so appreciative, he must have said about ten times how awesome it was and how much he appreciated it. I think he was just as exited as I was. Sunday, June 11,2000-It was about 3/4 of the way through the race and Jeremy was in the lead by about 7 or 8 seconds, we couldn't asked for anything better. But it got better. It started to downpour so we ran under a roof just outside the fire office were we thought my dad might be (he a fireman in the pits). We stood there for a while waiting for my dad but he didn't show up. I was really neat though because most of the drivers kept walking by us to go to their motorhomes. We sat there for about a half an hour just watching then all of the sudden here comes Jeremy and Shana. MRN radio stopped them for an interview and I didn't really want to bother him because I knew he probably had a lot on his mind right then. So we walked down the row of cars next to him so maybe when he walked by I could just give him a thumbs up or something. Then just as I looked over at him he was pointing at his hair as to gesture to mine and was giving me a thumbs up. It was so awesome he remembered me from the day before. We walked over to him and he shook my hand and said "what's up." I told him the it must be the luck from my hair was helping and he said again how much he appreciated it. He was just as happy to see me again, I think, as I was to see him. How many drivers would actually remember their fans with so much going on at the time. Jeremy has to be one of the nicest down to earth people I have ever met. It was real sad when his motor blew, It was a shame, but they'll come back to Michigan in August and well get em next time. ![]() Matt Gerig Story of Jeremy? I met him at Kutztown University in 1999. What a great guy!!! He was signing autographs for a long line of orderly people and stayed 2 hours past the scheduled time. He even stopped at one point to walk over to a baby and his father somewhere in the back of the line. The baby was wearing Jeremy Mayfield t-shirt and hat, and he went over to say hi and sign the shirt. That's "above and beyond" the call of duty and shows just what a great guy he is. When it was my turn to meet him, he signed my hat and gave me an extra signature on a pic (the rule was one per customer) and stopped to say hi to my 5 year old daughter. (she's a Rusty Wallace fan) I was walking on air afterwards!!!! He's such a great guy!!!!! Michelle Hobel I live in Bucyrus, Ohio. They were having an autograph session with Jeremy Mayfield, Cale Yarborough, Geoff Bodine and Wally Dallenbach. My husband & I were about 20th in line. The line was so huge!!! Jeremy was last in the line. I whipped right past the other 3, I only cared to meet Jeremy. There were all kinds of camera guys there interviewing all of them. As I ran up to him to get his autograph, he was sitting behind a table. I asked if I could get a picture taken with him, and he had a camera guy beside him, so I just kinda leaned over the table as my husband took the picture. Well, he told the camera guy to move and I went behind the table and got my picture taken with my arm around him!!! He is such a down to earth guy. I stayed there watching him and just listening to all the people and a boy went up to get his picture taken with him, but the sherrifs or guards would not let him go behind the table. It was almost time for the session to be over and the line was still so long. A couple of the others left and Jeremy stayed there to sign after it was time to go, the guards were the ones who finally said no more. But all in all, it was the most wonderful time I had ever had. I hope to do it again!!! Shell My second ever NASCAR event happened to be the 1998 Daytona 500. From the beginning laps I had noticed this "Mobil 1" car. For what ever reason I had zoned in on this car early in the race, telling my friend and long time NASCAR enthusiast (and Earnhardt fan), that I didn't know who this guy was but he could drive! As we all know JM finished second that day behind the "3" car. From that point on I was hooked as a Mayfield Fan. That June I was fortunate to be invited to Pocono with passes to the garage area. Prior to the start of the race we were able to go onto the track to where the drivers were being driven up for introductions. As I was standing there Jeremy and his wife were driven up. As he was walking up to be introduced I was able to shake hands with Jeremy, at which time I had told him that "today is the day, you're due," to which he replied "yea your right." Well, I thought just having been able to shake hands and speak to Jeremy was enough. But after he won the race I was blown away!!!!! Needless to say on the ride back to Connecticut that night I was in seventh heaven!!! Every time I see or hear about Jeremy's victory at Pocono I always think about our brief conversation. I'll be in Homestead this week (11/14/99) cheering on the twelve car and as we all know, "we're due" again. Tim Duff I met Jeremy 2 years ago in Phoenix @ the races he was so nice. He had his picture taken with me. I will be at the races in Phoenix again this November 7th and I would love to meet him again. He's just so nice and cute too. Glenda I first met Jeremy in 1991 while I was living in Nashville, TN. Jeremy was living there at the time and working for Sadler Racing. My roommate knew him and his roommates from Owensboro so we all hung out together a few times. I worked at a convenient store that happened to be on Jeremy's way to work and he started coming in a few times a week. Unfortunately I had to suddenly move back to Owensboro, so I didn't get to know him as well as I would have liked to. Last year I was able to attend two autograph sessions and I asked him if he remembered me, he said I looked familiar and I reminded him of how he knew me. He then said he remembered and asked how I had been, maybe he was just being kind but it made me feel good anyway. He will be back in Owensboro later this month for autographs and I am very much looking forward to seeing him again. Kelly Tichenor Met Jeremy twice in Las Vegas at the Tropicana Hotel. Nice guy. Shared champagne with us. Mary Craig Hi Lisa, I was so happy to find your site!! I absolutely LOVE Jeremy, and a neat thing happened a couple weeks ago at the Jiffy Lube 300 that I'd like to share. First of all, it was the most exciting day of my life :) It was my first Winston Cup race, and my son and I were treated to Hospitality by a gentleman who does marketing for SKF/Exide. We were lucky enough to be there to meet Jeff Burton before the race, and cheer the #99 on to another win!! (see pic of my son with Jeff, attached). As if that was not exciting enough, *this* diehard Jeremy fan had her moment in the sun just after meeting Jeff Burton. We were walking along a pathway behind the hospitality area, where there was much behind-the-scenes activity going on. Many golf carts were traveling along the same path, and we had to keep to the side to avoid the danger that was amidst all the excitement. All at once, a golf cart came up behind me. The driver was bringing Jeff Burton back to the inner track area. Just after I waved to Jeff, another cart came FLYING toward me. I jumped to the side of the path, looked at the cart, and saw a smiling, passenger, *Jeremy*, sitting on the back as they sped past me. I screamed a blood curdling "JEREMY" at the top of my lungs, tried to grab my camera, but it was all over SOOO fast!! The joy of seeing my hero in person made my heart pound, and I'm still smiling about it. After the cart had sped out of sight, I found out who the driver was......no surprises there, it was RUSTY! : ) All the best, ![]() Stacey May 26, 1999 Last week I was in Mooresville, NC visiting some teams' shops and happened to go to Rusty's new shop/museum. There was a sign on the door saying it wasn't opened yet, so my fiance and I looked in the front window and saw Rusty arranging chairs in the lobby. Then we saw Michael Kranefuss walking around. The next thing I know, Jeremy comes towards me and opens the door to say hi (because he saw me standing there with his shirt and hat on). He invited us inside to even though he said we probably weren't allowed in yet and then graciously posed for a picture with me. All this happened while the rest of his and Rusty's team went into another room to begin their weekly debriefing/meeting. I was so elated to meet him and especially in that fashion. I can't imagine any other driver going out of his way to chat with a fan while everyone else was waiting for him in the meeting. That was the second time I've met/talked to him and each time I've been an even bigger fan afterwards! Thanks Jeremy! ![]() Lisa Barret Wall.
